Speciality Polymer Capacitors

The SP-Cap from Panasonic is a SMD Aluminium electrolytic capacitor that uses a conductive polymer as its electrolyte. SP-Caps are primarily used as input and output capacitors for DC/DC converters, due to their ultra low ESR values.

SP-Caps are also an effective solution for:
  • Radiation noise reduction in digital signal processing circuits (MHz to GHz band)
  • Decoupling capacitors / output voltage smoothing with excellent transient response
Panasonic can provide a wide CV range starting from 2V up to 16V with capacitance values from 2.2 uF up to 560uF. Due to the polymer material SP-Caps are able to withstand ripple currents up to 4.2 Arms @ 100kHz.

The SP-Cap will be the best suitable solution for your application especially to reduce the noise in general and stabilize the power lines, because of extremely low ESR as seen in the chart below. For example the output ripple voltage could be reduced by a factor of 3 compared with a polymer tantalum capacitor, and by a factor of 5 compared with a low ESR tantalum capacitor, when you compare the same capacitance value.

Features of SP-Caps:

  • stable electrical performance
  • 125°C series is available
  • stable capacitance against DC Bias voltage and temperature
  • no voltage derating required for SP-Caps, unlike Tantalum caps
  • high reliability against short circuit compared with tantalum capacitors
  • high temperature types for lead free soldering are available
  • RoHS compliant range
  • extremely good ripple current capability
